Disclaimer: This is a community guide, not an official tier list from RedSaw Games Studio. Gene names, mutation odds, and balance can change with patches or Workshop mods. Use it to plan experiments in the gene system, then adjust for your layout, season, and bulletin orders.

Doloc Town crops accept up to three gene modules per seed. With nearly twenty mutations across more than thirty crop types, the goal is not perfect clones on day one—it is reliable harvests through acid rain, heatwaves, and thunder seasons while you climb toward automation. The tiers below rank modules by return on investment for a typical 1.0 vertical farm.

S tier — build around these first

Acid Shield / Corrosion Ward variants — Outdoor terraces lose whole planting days to acid rain without protection. One weather-resist module on your main cash crop (peppers, hops, grapes for cooking chains) pays for itself within a season. Stack with a yield module, not a third cosmetic trait.

High-Yield core (Yield I–III family) — Community testing consistently places yield multipliers in S tier for greenhouse winter gold and bulletin bulk orders. Yield does not fix dead plants, so pair with at least one resilience gene on exposed floors.

Drought Tolerance / Heat Hardy — Heatwaves drain stamina and wilt unprotected crops. Heat-hardy genes keep mid-platform sun belts productive while you finish tool upgrades and water storage.

Lightning Affinity (power-farm builds) — If you run solar and storm collectors, lightning-tuned crops that feed the grid belong in S tier for automation players. Skip until you have basic power routing from the Tech Tree.

A tier — excellent second picks

Growth Acceleration — Faster cycles mean more bulletin turns and gene lab retries. Slightly below yield because late-game farming automation reduces the value of shaving one day off manual harvests.

Rain Channel / Storm Irrigation traits — Strong on upper platforms where manual watering is tedious. Drops to B tier if you already automated sprinklers and drone watering.

Nutrient Efficiency — Lowers fertilizer spend before you unlock bulk compost loops. Great bridge tech between Getting Started and mid-game crafting.

Pest Repellent / Hardy Root — Niche but valuable on animal-adjacent platforms and mushroom beds where crop loss is hard to diagnose.

B tier — situational or late investments

Double Harvest chance genes — Exciting when they proc, inconsistent for timed orders. Use on leisure crops, not contract deadlines.

Market Fancy / premium appearance tags — Help specific town requests and festival displays; weak for raw gold-per-stamina.

Cold Snap tolerance alone — Useful in winter greenhouse transitions but redundant once indoor hubs maintain stable temperature.

Wide Canopy / platform shade helpers — Help mixed vertical layouts; outclassed by moving sensitive crops indoors.

C tier — low priority or trap picks

Pure cosmetic mutations — Collect for achievements and farm tours, not economy.

Thirsty / high-water genes without irrigation — They increase upkeep on a vertical farm where every platform has different plumbing. Avoid unless you are running a dedicated rain-capture experiment.

Conflicting trait pairs — Modules that boost growth while penalizing yield (or vice versa) often waste a slot. Community labs mark these as C tier until you have spare seeds for meme builds.

Duplicate resist stacking beyond cap — Many resistances have soft caps; a third acid module rarely beats adding yield or growth.

No. It is a community ranking based on player testing through Early Access and the 1.0 launch. RedSaw Games does not publish official gene tiers.

How many gene modules can each seed hold?

Up to three modules per seed. Plan all three slots before you commit rare samples, using the gene notes worksheet if needed.

Should I prioritize weather resist or yield first?

On outdoor vertical platforms, weather resist usually comes first because dead crops zero out yield. Greenhouse indoor farms can prioritize yield earlier.

Do gene tiers change in winter?

Yes. Heat and drought genes matter less indoors; yield and nutrient efficiency rise in relative value when you rely on greenhouse production.

Where do I get rare gene modules?

Ruin expeditions, bulletin rewards, faction quests, and late Tech Tree nodes. Old City Ruins adds higher-tier samples after the 1.0 story finale.

Can I undo a bad gene experiment?

You re-clone from saved seed stock or re-run the gene machine with new modules. Keep backup seeds before risky triple-slot rolls.
